Oil prices experienced a significant uptick on Monday fueled by President Donald Trump’s stark warning to Iran regarding stalled peace negotiations. With the key Strait of Hormuz shipping lane effectively closed amidst escalating hostilities, global benchmark Brent crude surged by 1.7%, now priced at $111.13 per barrel. Meanwhile, U.S.-traded oil climbed 2.1% to hit $107.62 per barrel.

The energy markets have entered a tumultuous phase since Iran responded to ongoing U.S. and Israeli military strikes with an effective blockade of this vital waterway, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas flows. The geopolitical strife has pushed markets into a state of uncertainty, sparking fears of potential oil supply shortages.

In a pointed message circulated on social media, Trump proclaimed, “They better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” The Iranian government reacted with growing frustration, asserting that the U.S. has not offered any meaningful concessions in response to Tehran’s latest proposals aimed at ceasing hostilities.

According to the semi-official Mehr news agency, failure to reach a compromise could plunge the ongoing discussions into an “impasse.” Just last week, Trump had indicated that the precarious ceasefire agreement was on “massive life support” after he deemed Iran’s demands as “totally unacceptable.” He is set to convene a meeting on Tuesday with top national security advisers to evaluate military options concerning Iran, as reported by Axios.

Throughout the course of the conflict, Iran has launched multiple strikes against neighboring nations, including incidents targeting Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On Sunday, tensions escalated further as a drone strike reportedly ignited a fire near the UAE's Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which officials labeled a “dangerous escalation.”

The UAE defense ministry disclosed that three drones were intercepted near the regional western border, with one successfully striking an electrical generator outside the plant’s inner perimeter. Local authorities confirmed that there were no injuries and no impact on radiation safety levels.

As the situation continues to develop, the international community remains watchful for potential shifts that could significantly affect global oil markets and security in the region.
