In a significant move to bolster cybersecurity, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis has forged a partnership with South Korea’s National Police Agency (KNPA) to combat an alarming rise in crypto-related criminal activities, particularly those linked to North Korean operatives.

The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday signifies a proactive approach encompassing not only threats from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) but also a broader commitment to enhance investigative capabilities across South Korea’s law enforcement framework. "While North Korean-driven attacks are understandably a national security focus, this partnership isn’t designed around a single threat. It’s fundamentally about building institutional capability," stated Ryan Kwon, Chainalysis’s country director, while speaking to Cointelegraph.

The urgency of this collaboration stems from a staggering statistic: in April alone, North Korean-linked crypto theft reached a jaw-dropping $578 million, primarily due to hacks against entities like Kelp DAO and the Drift Protocol. Data from CrowdStrike further highlights the gravity of the situation, reporting that DPRK-affiliated cybercriminals were accountable for $2 billion in crypto losses throughout 2025, marking a 51% increase from the previous year.

Under the terms of the MoU, the KNPA will gain access to tailored training programs developed by Chainalysis, including professional certifications designed to equip investigators with the necessary skills to track illicit fund flows effectively. "To investigate these cases effectively, Korean investigators need global visibility into illicit fund flows," Chainalysis emphasized.

This collaboration is not Chainalysis's first venture with South Korean authorities. Previously, a joint investigation led to the dismantling of an international hacking syndicate in Seoul, which had pilfered approximately $30 million and ultimately traced its operations to Thailand.

The announcement arrives shortly after the launch of a special multi-agency initiative by South Korean police aimed at combating crypto-based money laundering, dubbed the Money Laundering Eradication Task Force, which falls under the purview of the Economic Crime Investigation Division.

This partnership highlights the imperative need for advanced cybersecurity measures and cross-border collaboration in an increasingly complex digital landscape, as both South Korean authorities and Chainalysis work to secure the integrity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
